Dorothy runs back to the house to find the oil can. The Tin Woodman is very sad and cannot move. He has been standing in the forest for more than a year with his ax in the air.
When Dorothy brings the oil can, the Scarecrow helps her oil the Tin Woodman's rusted joints. First, he moves his head, then his arms, and then his legs. He is so happy and thankful!
"Water is very bad for my tin body!" he explains. "If it rains, I rust and cannot move. Where are you going?" "We're going to the Emerald City," Dorothy answers. "Perhaps the Great Oz can also give the Scarecrow a brain."
